Description
The Society for Territorial and Environmental Prosperity (STEP-BG) was officially registered in 2014 in Bulgaria. STEP-BG team believes that High Nature Value farming, agroecology, nature conservation and climate resilience are the pillars for rural prosperity and works towards developing and promoting policies that support them.
STEP-BG has focused its local activities in the region of Western Stara Planina where it partners with farmers, advisors, local authorities, development associations and environmental NGOs as well as local businesses to co-design and test innovative nature-friendly solutions for farming needs.
At the policy level, STEP-BG is a member of the Bulgarian CAP Strategic Plan Monitoring Committee and of the newly formed national working group on CAP 2028-2034.
Role in the project
Within GrassConnect, STEP-BG hosts a MAGHub in the Western Stara Planina region, which is recognised for its extensive areas of High Nature Value semi-natural grasslands.
The MAGHub team is led by Vyara Stefanova, who serves as the main liaison with local hub partners and national policymakers.
STEP-BG leads Task 4.1, which provides a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the social, technical, economic and policy-related drivers affecting grassland management. Together with IEEP, STEP-BG co-leads WP4 on the assessment of STEP drivers across the MAGHubs.
The Task 4.1 team is led by agricultural economist Dr Yanka Kazakova, who helps strengthen the connections between science, policy and practice.
